How to Help a Cat Feel Safe in a New Space
Slow introductions, familiar scents, and predictable routines can make a new environment less overwhelming.
A new room or home can feel enormous to a cat. Giving them time and control usually works better than encouraging them to explore everything immediately.
Start small
Begin with one quiet room containing food, water, a litter box, hiding options, and a comfortable resting spot.
Use familiar scents
Bedding, toys, or a familiar blanket can make the new environment smell more recognizable.
Keep routines predictable
Regular feeding and play times can help a cat understand what to expect.
Do not pull them out of hiding
Hiding is a normal coping strategy. Make sure the hiding place is safe and allow the cat to emerge when ready.
Expand gradually
Once your cat is eating, resting, and moving around confidently, give access to more space at their pace.
